Your Tyres Do Everything
Steering, braking, accelerating — all of it happens through four small patches of rubber on the road. Worn or poorly maintained tyres compromise every one of these functions. Here's what to stay on top of.
Tread Depth
The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm. An easy test: place a coin into the tread groove. If you can see the top of the coin, it's time for new tyres.
Tyre Pressure
Check your vehicle handbook or the sticker inside the driver's door for the correct pressure. Over-inflation causes the centre of the tyre to wear faster; under-inflation wears the edges and reduces fuel economy significantly.
Wheel Alignment & Balancing
- Alignment – Misaligned wheels cause uneven tyre wear and can pull your vehicle to one side. Get it checked after hitting a large pothole or kerb.
- Balancing – Imbalanced wheels cause vibration through the steering wheel, especially at higher speeds.
When to Replace
